Hello, we have a long fence which we want to cover with plants. DH has banned climbers (apparently there’s no point as they’ll pull the fence down????) so I’m looking for shrubs / plants which will give good cover to fences. anyideas would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

I guess we need to know if there is a bed in front of the fence .

I'm in the same school as your DH re climbers putting weight on a fence, increasing wind resistance and damaging the fence .

But I'd bet my bottom dollar that there will be wiser heads suggesting climbers that are less prone to fence damage !

Laurel, Photinia, Garrya, Yew, Mahonia, Rhododendron if you’ve got the right soil type (but there are some which work on alkaline soil). Big, evergreen plants so depends how wide your border is and how much pruning you want to do.

Yes, big bed in front of the fence, maybe 1.5m deep

Garrya looks beautiful! Never seen it before!
