I'd been tending to it in the lounge to protect from frost, BBC told me no more frost and at least 7 degrees overnight from now on so I planted him outside yesterday. Woke up this morning to crisp white grass and - 3 Hmm
Is it a goner? Can it be rescued?

Oh no, I love Bougainvillea. It depends how sheltered it is, you might just need to cut off any damaged/black bits, fingers crossed!

It's been ridiculously cold this year. My money plant, ten years in my dining room without a problem, froze to death. So good luck with Bougainvillea, if just this one frost it may be OK. But get some fleece for it.

You'd still be pushing it to go from lounge temperatures to 7 deg - that
is unless your lounge drops to 7deg every night, or you've been hardening it off by putting it out during the day.

Hope it will be OK - sometimes it's not just one frost that's the problem, it's being continuously cold and wet. This site gives some encouragement - a bouganvillea which survived 3 (not adjacent) nights "in the high 20s" which is about -2 to -3.

It had been out in the daytimes so had a bit of hardening off. It doesn't look too bad but you can tell its definitely not enjoyed its frost experience

I'd have said mid-May would have been better. Hope it pulls through.

And I never trust the BBC weather report for gardening purposes.

How did it freeze to death in your dining room?

Ha! That's what I'd like to know too. Single glazed windows in listed building so it's particularly cold in there on a frosty night is my best guess. Never happened before though. Will ensure its got enough warmth overnight in future winters if I've got any plants in there.
