Anyone else finding their plants/seedlings are in a sort of stasis? Is it the crap weather?

Everything seems to be a bit...meh, this year Sad

Seedlings not progressing, seeds not germinating as quickly as usual, plants perfectly healthy and alive but just not doing much growing. Usually by this time my bedding plants and hanging baskets are starting to get a bit bushier and the odd bit of colour appearing etc...this year the plants are fine, they're alive, but they look the same as they did when I put them in.

Anyone else? Is it the relentlessly grey weather and lack of proper sunshine?

Are your seeds outside? I have mine on window sills and all doing ok.

Bedding plants only just gone in, but lots of my other plants only just greening. I think the bulb like
Tulips and daffodils always make us think everything should start, but it doesn't until late spring.

I agree it's been a bit grey, but some patches of sunshine.

sadpapercourtesan · 13/04/2021 16:22

I did have them on window sills, but the cats launched a campaign against that Angry so now they're outside, but I move them all in when it's really cold, then put them out again, move them into the sun when it makes an appearance etc.

I'm impatient Grin

Yes - mine are in an unheated conservatory and they're not growing much. Glad it's not just me!

Hebeee · 13/04/2021 16:35

Same here - unheated polytunnel and all just looking the same as they have for what seems like an age 🙄

APurpleSquirrel · 13/04/2021 17:36

Definitely slower this year - our cherry hasn't flowered yet but had by this time last year.
Seedlings in our unheated greenhouse aren't doing much & keep getting overnight frosts so can't plant anything out yet.

FindingMeno · 13/04/2021 17:37

Definitely. I think its the lack of rain, then it turned cold.

MrsJamin · 13/04/2021 18:33

Yeah it's so odd, my lilac was changing every day three weeks ago and literally hasn't changed since. Getting fed up of this dry cold weather!

sadpapercourtesan · 13/04/2021 18:36

I'm so glad it's not just me! I'm not a patient person and I keep popping out and almost wanting to poke the plants to make them grow Grin I'm definitely overwatering stuff out of boredom as well.

I think it's partly just the utter fucking ennui of the past year - I'm ready for summer NOW, I want it to be sunny, bright and sociable...and it isn't!

It's not just you. My garden is looking pretty feeble at the moment.

TiddleTaddleTat · 13/04/2021 19:05

Same here. Unheated conservatory seedlings are struggling to germinate, must be low night time temps.

ginandwineandbaileys · 13/04/2021 19:11

I was thinking the same this morning. Last night was zero temps, and ground frozen in my garden at 8 am. Nothing really changing, or growing. Looking forward to next week and warmer spring temperatures

NineOClockOnASaturday · 13/04/2021 20:09

The garden itself is looking fine (it's always good in spring and goes off the boil in summer, frankly) but the seedlings are not doing well. Some got off to a flying start indoors but now seem frozen in time, and many of those I sowed outside haven't germinated at all.

Halfhardy · 15/04/2021 07:55

I've just started a new garden. Most of the perennials that I planted in the Autumn are only just starting to show, but there's no sign of the bare root plants that I planted 6 weeks ago. I'm trying hard not to channel my inner 4 year old and dig them up to check on their progress!

IstandwithJackieWeaver · 15/04/2021 09:28

Everything is very slow this year due to the cold and lack of rain. We've still got daffs and magnolia in bud as we're fairly high up and a few degrees cooler than other parts of the area.

MaryIsA · 15/04/2021 10:43

Everything looks like its waiting...a couple of days of warmth and a spring shower and it'll all go crazy. Including the weeds!

TheMostHappy · 15/04/2021 10:46

My bulbs aren't doing terribly well. I have a few sprouts here and there - hyacinths are doing rubbish. Tulips very leafy but no flower buds. Magnolias don't seem to be doing particularly well this year - lots of brown to the flowers which is disappointing.

candycane222 · 15/04/2021 10:51

Yes I m sure it's the cold. Grass isn't even growing much. I was looking at some pictures on my phone from kast spring (admittedly a ber warm one) and we are at least 2 weeks behind here vs 2020. It does mean that the daffs are lasting longer than usual though Smile

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 15/04/2021 10:56

I’ve been watching a tulip in my front garden. 10 days ago the bud started to turn red.

It still hasn’t opened because it’s too fricking cold.

rosiedeus · 15/04/2021 11:36

I've seen hardly any bees, no butterflies, and just a few birds too. It's quite depressing

senua · 15/04/2021 13:00

I've been to check on the hawthorn. There's nothing resembling blossom. Not even buds.Sad

CatWithARabbit · 15/04/2021 13:23

Everything is a good three weeks behind this year. Never known it to be this cold in April !

Babdoc · 15/04/2021 13:29

I’m v pleased I haven’t needed to mow the lawn since I last did it weeks ago!
I think things have started kicking off in the last two days though- my perennials are all suddenly appearing (a relief, as I feared they’d died in the minus 18C we had here in Scotland), the tulips are in bud, my plum tree is laden with blossom, the aubretia, forsythia and daffies are in full flower and I’ve had large numbers of bumble bees and even one brave butterfly.

whatswithtodaytoday · 15/04/2021 13:29

I agree, we're 2-3 weeks behind last year (which was very warm). I should have planted loads of seeds the last couple of weeks, but am leaving them until the weekend as the ones I've already done are doing very little. Only really the cosmos have come up and got away properly.

This time last year I had a foxglove flowering!

rosiedeus · 15/04/2021 18:32

Since were two weeks behind, I suppose it's fine to plant a rose hedge of bare roots shrubs, and a magnolia?

rosiedeus · 15/04/2021 18:32

We're...
