Should I give up on this mange tout?

Not sure what to do! I’ve been hardening off this pea but a while ago it’s lower leaves went yellow/died and upper leaves look pale and with white spots?

Should I just bin it? Poor thing has suffered from my lack of knowledge.

I have other healthy (I think) looking ones that I sowed later and better when I’d learned more.

Thanks

Should I give up on this mange tout?

Looks fine to me - the lower leaves always go yellow and fall off. They are just there to keep it going when it's just emerged from the seed and is starting growing, they don't last beyond that. Plant it out and let it take its chances, is what I would do.

Agree it looks ok and doing what mange tout do !

Thanks! That’s hopeful. Even the white bits on the leaves are ok? You might have to enlarge the photo to see. Thanks

It’s probably just running out of nutrients... will be fine once you plant it out and give it a feed.

Ok thanks! It’s meant to be -1 here over the weekend so should I wait till that’s passed? I think I read that they could cope with up to -2 but still worried!

There's nothing in the enlarged photo that would give me a moment's concern.

Where is it at the moment? If it's indoors, then I would harden it off by taking it out in the morning and bringing it in at night for about two weeks. You could also put it in a bigger pot.

Allthenumbers · 09/04/2021 12:17

I’ve been hardening off for about a week so my plan is to plant out today and hope for the best!

Thanks all.

Good luck, hope you get lots of lovely mange tout!

Peas are Hardy - mine have been out and are fine even with a very hard frost we had a couple of days ago - BUT mine were only sprouted inside and them sown as soon as the shoot was breaking the seed. I don't think I'd plant out inside reared plants when -1 is predicted, after gardening off for just a week. Better to wait for another week when hopefully the temps will be above zero at night again.

Sown direct outside I mean.

Allthenumbers · 09/04/2021 14:10

Oh dear! It’s done now. I’ve just constructed support and planted it then saw messages. Hmm. Is there anything I can do to protect from frost? I don’t have fleece but have cardboard and blankets etc

I have 6 other pea plants not planted out yet (sown later and look healthy) at least!

A large plastic bottle, bottom cut off and put firmly over the top will act as a mini greenhouse each cold night. Or whack a cardboard box over it when it's forecast to be cold (only during night as obv cuts out light), making sure to weigh it down firmly so it won't blow over and damage the plant. Nothing ventured - it'll probably perform best of the lot!

Allthenumbers · 09/04/2021 19:10

Great! Thank you! I’ll give that a go. Yes fingers crossed!
