Hi there freezing tonight -3... peonies have lots of red shoots coming out ground about 20 Cm high, should I protect them? Thank you!

I was wondering that, but I haven't got any fleece!

Any alternative suggestions for giving protection, if protection is required, will be much appreciated. I have some old cushion pads filled with hollowfibre, that are waiting to go to the tip (they've gone flat). I could extract the filling from them if it would be any good.

That would work @LakieLady, or bubble wrap if you have any?

deeplyambivalent · 05/04/2021 18:27

Is this a euphemism?

Pinkywoo · 05/04/2021 18:36

No, it's the gardening section! Grin

Came on to see mini fleece jackets tbh...

I've never given peonies any special treatment. We often have frosts into May and it never seems to have done the peonies any harm.

Trumplosttheelection · 05/04/2021 23:20

Peonies are hardened aren't they?

ichundich · 05/04/2021 23:23

Not sure about peonies; got the feeling they are hardy to a degree? But I have wrapped up my hydrangeas.

We didn't get a frost in the end anyway. It was bloody cold though.

I was at my SIL's yesterday and they had flurries of snow, and I was talking to MIL on the phone earlier and it started snowing where she is. We're all in the SE and it's the first time I can recall snow in April round my way since 1966.

I turned plastic plant pots over mine last night and tonight... hopefully that works!

FuzzyPuffling · 06/04/2021 18:18

I don't do anything with mine and they have always been fine. I think paeonies are tougher than they look.

Can I jump in and ask about delphiniums? I only planted last year and I can see lots of leaves have appeared in last week or so. Do I need to protect it? I'm guessing not but I'd hate to lose it! We've had snow here today too.

I've never fleeced my peonies and they seem to have survived quite a lot of cold snaps.
