Would you prune this baby magnolia? (Photo)

This magnolia has been in about 4 years. It has grown but very slowly and is still essentially a tall stick. Eventually, in theory, it could be a large tree. Should I be shaping it? Reducing the height now to get it to bulk up a bit or leave well alone?

Apologies for sticks round the bottom- making it hard to see - they were for chicken protection

I would leave well alone.

Thanks- I’m trying to stop myself taking the main stem down about a metre!

Don't prune it when it's about to flower.

Is it tree shaped? I can’t see what’s it and what’s stakes. I would cut off any low branches that are making it not tree shaped. And leave just one trunk.

It has a very tall single central stem and then quite starting very low side branches- all on one pane so it’s very flat if that makes sense. It’s all very thin and I’m worried it will just be too tall without the bulk to support it

It’s the roots that support it. I wouldn’t trim the main stem.

Ok, thanks
