Bulb/seed/fungus ID help pls - pic attached

Wise mumsnetters, can anyone identify what is in the attached pic? There are quite a few of them buried in the lawn and some in flowerbeds too. They've probably always been a spring occurrence but I'm not a keen gardener so never noticed them before. This year we have a dog who wants to eat everything so wondered what they were (and if they're hazardous for dogs). We've got loads of pine/fir type trees so I wondered if it was what happened to fallen pine cones. DH says it's a type of fungus, but they're buried in the ground, not growing out.

Common Earthball fungi at a guess. If so it's poisonous.

Thanks @alkanet I've just looked at images online of that fungus and, thankfully, it's definitely not that.

I think it is one of the "puffball" fungi - it's got rid of all its spores and has burst open, so has lost its ball shape.
