Do you have a greenhouse?

Hi, I'm contemplating getting a greenhouse. I'm wondering if it's worth the investment? Do you have a greenhouse? What do you grow in it - apart from tomatoes 🤣 Is it worth the money?

Happy Get yourself on fb marketplace. There's 2 greenhouses for sale For £30 each...one is just the frame and the other which is in Billingham is a mix of plastic and glass. Replacement glass is around £2 a panel.

ShitInAPyrexDish · 22/02/2021 15:36

I got myself a greenhouse back in summer off of a free page, I didn't get round to putting it up then as the garden needed so much work. I've looked at it today, I have no idea how it goes back together, so that's going to be an amusing task. 🤦🏼‍♀️

GnomeDePlume · 23/02/2021 02:26

How deep do you plan your raised beds to be?

Our allotment bar the orchard is made up of beds which are slightly raised above the paths. Even the few inches makes a difference to the drainage of the growing soil. We need this drainage because the lower part of the plot is prone to flooding.

It's probably being an allotmenteer with limited access to water but worrying about too much or too little water is a constant for me!

Lovemusic33 · 23/02/2021 10:37

I have a kind of greenhouse/potting shed that I had built during the summer last year, I grew tomatoes and mini cucumbers last year but have plans for a lot more this year. I will start most of my seeds off in there this year so can plant a lot more (veg and bedding plants).

Cally62 · 23/02/2021 18:33

Happy Where for art thou.

There's a few greenhouses for free on Marketplace.

Well...dp has spent all day clearing a huge bush and digging up the roots. Then burnt all the wood in wood burner in garden whilst enjoying a brandy and baileys.

I can now plan on where to build a pizza oven....Might have to turn the garage into a bar. Grin

Lovemusic33 How exciting...what seeds are you thinking of buying.

I've still got heritage carrots growing from last year...and beetroot that I discovered today. They seem good too.

Happyinheels · 23/02/2021 21:32

Hi!! Sooooo sorry - work has been manic the past couple of days. I kind of fell into bed last night!

@Cally62 Oooo that's exciting! I'll check them out thanks! I haven't looked for a couple of days!! Let's hope there's something I can collect. I'll have a look.

@ShitInAPyrexDish that's my fear too!!! Let us know how it goes!

@GnomeDePlume I'm making them 3 boards deep - about 18"? I'll go out in the morning and measure them. I was going to do 2 deep but I'm going with 3, purely for aesthetic reasons to save my aching back! I'm undecided if I should be putting membrane in the bottom though?

@Lovemusic33 that sounds exciting - keep us updated on what you sow!

I haven't managed to do anything other than work yesterday and today!

@Happyinheels I did try and leave the sides and ends as complete as I could and just collected in a large van. This way there is only about 8 parts so I should hopefully manage, I hope so anyway.

Happyinheels · 23/02/2021 22:11

@ShitInAPyrexDish hopefully it won't be too tricky to put back together then 🤞, bit like a giant jigsaw! Was it easy to take down and transport?

@Cally62 I can see the one in Billingham. Do you think it's revivable? I can't see any others though so I wonder if they've gone 🤔

OP posts:
GnomeDePlume · 23/02/2021 22:26

I wouldn't put membrane at the bottom. There aren't so many weeds which will come up from that depth. You will want the worms to come up to help till the soil for you.

Cally62 · 24/02/2021 06:39

Happy Ther's a lovely one in Scarborough.

The one in Billingham isn't fantastic but it's free.

Just keep looking...at least there are some available. You don't have to take the first one.

'Tis raining today so might just have an afternoon planning and looking for ideas on pizza ovens.

Gatekeeper · 24/02/2021 06:49

I love my greenhouse, got it for 50 quid from a lovely old gent who was being forced off his allotment Sad by baddy council. Its an old Crittal one just 6x8 and my haven. I use it to overwinter tender plants, sow seeds and pot on seedlings. Grow them on until ready to go out. I also grow toms and chillis but never had success with peppers as they dont put on enough flesh.

Lovely being in there with radio on and talking to my cats and listening to birds singing...
Bliss

Bluntness100 · 24/02/2021 06:58

Ours is functional we basically use it as a potting shed, so we have all the plant pots in there, plus the bins of soil etc, we also grow tomatoes and chillis, the usual suspects, bring on seeds, and there’s a grape vine which I’m constantly having to cut back, and we over winter plants in there,

Overall I’d say it’s a very useful space.

Happyinheels · 24/02/2021 07:52

Good morning!

@GnomeDePlume brilliant thanks! I'll go measure how deep they are later.

@Cally62 I've just seen the one in Scarborough! It's been promised to someone. I'll just keep looking. It's good to know they're out there though. The weather is grotty here too. Looking forward to being off on Friday so I can get back out there! A friend is buying a house and it has a greenhouse with polycarb panels in. He said he doesn't want it and that I can have it. But I've no idea how long it will take for the house to go through so I'm going to keep looking.

@Gatekeeper that's a bargain! What a shame for the old man being forced off his allotment though. It sounds like you're cherishing it and reloving it.

@Bluntness100 I've got loads of plant pots to house! I'm liking the idea of it becoming my haven.

Happy, when me and dh were dismantling the greenhouse we took loads of photos and I marked every pane with a glass pen i. Front top right, left centre back etc etc. This helped enormously when putting it back together

Cally62 · 25/02/2021 07:38

Happy That's great that your friend doesn't want the one in his garden. We bought a second home a few years back and it took 5 months to complete. Hopefully it won't take your friend that long.

At least you can get on with planning and sorting out the rest of the garden. You can spend the money saved on buying a new greenhouse on plants and seeds.

Oi Happy What's the latest on the greenhouse. Smile

Happyinheels · 01/03/2021 20:53

Hey hey @Cally62 !
Nothing to report on the greenhouse front yet Confused however I spent the weekend finishing off giving the fence another coat of paint, also painted a wooden trim round the raised brick planter on the patio and also the patio table! I'm toying with the idea of getting one of those small cheap plastic greenhouses so I can at least crack on until my friend gets his house with the free greenhouse 🤣

OP posts:
ShitInAPyrexDish · 01/03/2021 21:48

So I spent a couple of hours out in the garden trying to put it back together today, safe to say that I really have no idea how it goes back together. 🤷🏼‍♀️😂 Going to start early tomorrow, have roped in the other people I live with so hopefully 3 adults can figure it out right? How I wish I had labelled everything like previous posters did.

Happyinheels · 02/03/2021 07:54

@ShitInAPyrexDish oh no!!!!!!! I can only imagine - like a giant jigsaw with breakable parts! Fingers crossed that you are successful today!

OP posts:
ShitInAPyrexDish · 02/03/2021 22:14

We have success, the frame is up. My partner came along and said, you've got that side the wrong way around. After that, it was so easy. 😂 I'm back to work tomorrow so the glass may have to wait until the weekend, hopefully the weather will behave and the wind will be kind to me and hold off.

Do you have a greenhouse?
Gatekeeper · 03/03/2021 08:55

Its great when it starts to take shape...bet you can't wait to get the glass in and get going!

Happyinheels · 03/03/2021 20:23

@ShitInAPyrexDish that is amazing!!!!! Woop woop!!! Little happy dance going on here for you. Well done! Imagine all the growing you're going to get on with 😊

OP posts:
ShitInAPyrexDish · 04/03/2021 18:10

@Gatekeeper I can't wait to get going, don't have any room left in the windowsills for any more seedlings. 😂

ShitInAPyrexDish · 04/03/2021 18:13

@Happyinheels I know, pretty impressed considering the day before I was tempted to give up. When you collect yours make sure you mark every piece, that is something I regret as it would have made life much easier. Hindsight is a wonderful thing. 😂 If you can I'd try and leave the sides and ends as intact as possible, less to put back together but would mean that you would need a van or something to collect.
