Do you have a greenhouse?

Hi, I'm contemplating getting a greenhouse. I'm wondering if it's worth the investment? Do you have a greenhouse? What do you grow in it - apart from tomatoes 🤣 Is it worth the money?

I think you need quite fresh manure for a hot box, as it's the rotting process that produces heat 🔥

I use IBC tanks as water butts, have 3 now and wondering whether to have another as they're a bit addictive.

Good luck finding a greenhouse, you won't regret it.

KirstenBlest · 19/02/2021 20:22

Not RTFT. I have one. i use it to start things growing, and to overwinter.

They come up occasionally on free sites. Depending on where you are in the country, look at neighbouring sites too. Don't worry if a few panes are missing - they are likely to be a standard size.

Mine is on hard core covered with gravel.

One advantage is that DCat uses it as a catcave. He finds different places to sleep depending on how warm it is in there. Smile

I really want a greenhouse! Sorry @Happyinheels for derailing the thread, but has anyone any opinions on a greenhouse in the front garden?! I've got space at the end of my driveway (not really overlooked) which is a total sun trap and wasted space, it's just monoblok. I'd love to put a greenhouse there instead of in my small, dark, back garden.. But it'd look ridiculous wouldn't it?!

It might look a bit odd at first when it's empty, but they are beautiful when full of plants.

I can't have a greenhouse because where we live it is too windy. Greenhouses are like trampolines in our neighbourhood.

But - I am currently in the process of putting veg boxes in my front garden. I resisted for years, but it a gorgeous sun trap. The neighbours have all been very positive. Who needs grass? I want peas and lots of strawberries.

Happyinheels · 19/02/2021 20:45

@lillylemons that's brilliant! I looked at them too, they're ideal aren't they? I toyed with the idea of buying one to test myself if I'd use it and if I did then I could buy the greenhouse!

@GnomeDePlume I'm feeling it! Totally feeling inspired by this thread! Do you have veg beds as well?

@SweatyBetty20 Awesome to have a fig tree in there! Gone are my preconceived ideas of just tomatoes and cucumbers - bring on the figs, the lemons and limes!
And very true about the bad weather - I'm in the NE, it's wet!

Grow your tomatoes from slices of your eating tomatoes 🍅

Happyinheels · 19/02/2021 20:52

@Cathpot thanks for the marigolds tip - I'm going to have to come back and post a 'Help Me Please' post when I've got one!

I'm converting the lovely old wooden greenhouse that's been in our garden for 50+ years into a gin bar. I'm definitely going to have a lemon and lime tree!

hedgehogger1 · 19/02/2021 20:53

Mine currently has guinea pigs in it

MaryIsA · 19/02/2021 20:54

We moved last year and I so miss my greenhouse. It had a lovely shady side that was perfect for cuttings and seedlings. It was brilliant to potter in on rainy or cold but sunny days early in the year. I’d sit in there and think.

Grew tomatoes and chillis and sow many seedlings. It extends the season.

But I mostly miss the sitting and thinking.

We need to build and extension and move an oil tank before I can get another one. The architect thinks I’m mad.

MaryIsA · 19/02/2021 20:55

A friend has the most amazing grape vine in hers, an apricot tree, and loads of tender beautiful stuff.

hedgehogger1 · 19/02/2021 20:55

My thing is that I now want a bigger greenhouse...

Happyinheels · 19/02/2021 20:55

@ViperAtTheGatesOfDawn I'll Google those water butts thanks.
Yeah, my friend said it needed to be well rotted. I think a local farm normally gives it away, I'll have to check if they're still doing that.
Thank you - I missed out on a free one earlier today. I'll keep looking but I imagine I'll get impatient and have to buy one!

@KirstenBlest thanks for that - I just missed out on a free one earlier HmmI'll keep looking!
Awe the lucky cat having a little cosy hiding place in there - I imagine it's delightful in summer Smile

@LouScot no apology necessary at all Smile Go for it! It's your garden and it sounds like it could be a perfect spot.

I can understand the sitting and thinking, I do that in my garden... it's my happy place. It's good that you've put that idea out there though, plans and dreams are good 😊
