Amaryllis - anyone managed to get theirs to reflower?

I always get these for Christmas and love them but have never managed to get one to reflower.

I retrieved last year's bulbs that I had put away in the shed after they flowered and after cutting back the leaves. The leaves have grown but nothing seems to be shooting.

Has anyone managed to reflower?

I did one year, by sheer fluke I think. I'd planted it late so by the time it had finished flowering it was spring so I could plant it out in the garden, leaves and all. I just left it alone to grow & die back naturally. I lifted the bulb in about October and put it in the shed and forgot about it. Then in the middle of winter I went in there and it had started to sprout so I potted it up. Flowers were smaller though.

I haven't been so lucky yamadori. It would be lovely to get them to reflower as they are so beautiful.

Yes, put it in the dark for 6 weeks in about August, bring out in September/October. Worked for me and my mum's.

Some how we've managed to get ours to flower every year for the last 6 years! We had 1 flower the 1st year, then 2, then 3 and now it's at 4 flowers each time. It's beautiful when it flowers but looks awful the rest of the year. This is it from last year...

But what do you do with it between now and August?

It just sits in its pot, doing nothing. We cut it down and just leave it. Actually, it grew again in late 2020, instead of doing nothing so at the moment we have leaves but no flower.

Yes! I got one last year and Just left it in the greenhouse once the flower had gone. It actually had 4 flowers on it this year, and flowered well before the one I bought this year, which is still at the stage where the stalk looks a bit like a green penis. I was also given another older bulb as a gift, which is just starting to show green shoots.

@mumto3boysHE - do you water it or is it totally hands off in that long in between period?
Mine have been sitting with leaves shortly after I took them out of shed in November. May have watered them at first but think I gave up. Wondering if I should just chuck them?

@torquewench - 😂 I think the same thing every time they get to that just before flowering stage. Phallic indeed!

We were quite neglectful tbh, we just watered it when we remembered.

torquewench · 16/01/2021 21:44

Just leave yours until about November then put it in a pot on your windowsill with fresh soil and water it ... what'a the worst that can happen? (The latter part of that sentence is something I apply as a general rule to most things 😉)

When I had a conservatory I had a whole collection. They re flowered at all sorts of odd times of the year. I just cut the spent flower stems off and left them in the conservatory in their pots, watering lightly, very occasionally until they started growing again.
