Plants that like the shade but the slugs don’t like?!

I love hostas but I can’t seem to keep them intact, so need another plan!

So far, I have successfully kept alive...

Alchemilla mollis
Verbena
Fuschia
Bergenia
Brunnera
Photinia
Kerria
Ferns
Foxgloves
Sedum

Does anyone have any tips for me of yucky-tasting (to slugs!) shade-loving plants?

The ever popular Crainsbill geranium, lots of varieties, like shade and slugs leave them alone.

Heucheras
St. John's wort
Japanese anemones
Yellow loosestrife
Michaelmas daisies
Winter jasmine
Roses (don't know which types - I inherited them with the house)
Ajuga

All of the above thrive in the shaded side of my slug infested garden.

You could look at trying to encourage slug predators like hedgehogs and frogs as well

As well as plants mentioned above, I have astrantias that don't seem to get touched by slugs, and also lamium maticulatum 'ghost'. The lamium is really good as it starts flowering late April and is still going strong.

You could look at trying to encourage slug predators like hedgehogs and frogs as well In my experience, frogs are over-rated as slug predators.

Really, how sad but explains things in my frog and slug infested garden!

I have recently found that spraying strong cold coffee directly onto the leaves of plants seems to keep the slugs off without damaging the plants.

Astilbe
Cranesbill
Liriope muscari
Heuchera
All seem to escape being munched on in my shady border!

climbingcorfecastle · 22/06/2020 22:10

I have loads of slugs in my garden and astilbe seems safe from their menu.

OP - is the list of plants in your first post a good choice for shady non slug destroyed plants? If so I'll copy in my grim shady corner. I love alchemilla mollis.

Hellebores. You could also try making a garlic wash to deter slugs. I think Sarah Raven had instructions how to make it. I tried it on hostas and the slugs left them alone
