We were lucky enough to inherit a lot of well-established roses when we moved in to our current house, but have no idea what they may be! Please could you let me know if you recognise any!

The second one looks like Gertrude Jekyll. Not sure about the others will think.

Beebumble2 · 14/06/2020 17:02

The first one looks a bit like my Lady of Shallot.

Beebumble2 · 14/06/2020 17:05

The third one looks like Mme Alfred Carriere, but I don’t have one of those to compare it with.

kitschplease · 14/06/2020 18:19

Thank you! I really appreciate it.

If the second one has no spines it could be Zepherine Drouhin.

I agree the third looks like mme alfred carriere. Does it have an amazing scent?

kitschplease · 14/06/2020 18:30

The second one has spines. The third one has an amazing scent- it seems to tick a lot of the Claire Austin boxes.

Here are two more. The red one is an indestructible climber. The yellow one - apologies for the poor photo - has a very intense, tropical scent.

Thanks for the help - I will pay it back when I have learnt more!

I’m not sure. I don’t think the first one is a Lady of Shalott. I have two of those and the flowers on them are brighter and less complex.

The third one could be a Desdemona. It would help to know how big the Rose bushes are, as that is one way to narrow it down a bit 🤔

nearlynermal · 14/06/2020 19:13

The white one could be Claire Austin. Smells a bit lychee like and the buds can be a bit tinted, sometimes pinkish or yellowish.

kitschplease · 14/06/2020 19:30

The white one has a lychee kind of smell, yes.

Agree with comments on the first - it seems paler than other images of Lady of Shallot I've seen.

I really wish the previous owners had left a map of the garden! The bushes are all enormous and climbed over 6ft as have been neglected for many years, I think.

Lovely. We have four David Austin roses, Claire Austin being one of them and I would say yours is that too.

Beebumble2 · 14/06/2020 19:59

I have Claire Austin, but it doesn’t have such a closed in complex centre.

Beebumble2 · 14/06/2020 20:05

Take it all back! My Claire Austin is planted next to City of York. I’m posting photos of my Claire Austin and Lady of Shallot, so you can compare.

Your yellow rose could be Golden Showers.

kitschplease · 14/06/2020 20:28

It's a mystery! My lady of shallot-a-like is paler and the heads seem larger. Now I want a lady of shallot like yours!
Golden showers doesn't seem very on brand for David Austin, will take a look 🤣
Thanks everyone for your help!

i just searched the David Austin website for orange roses. It looks to me like The Lady Gardner is a pretty good match in terms of the size and shape of the flower as well as the colour
