We really fancy doing this in our garden to shelter a table and chairs. We will build the structure but was wondering if anyone has done this and has some tips please!!

I looked into it for a chicken shelter roof. You need some seriously strong posts and structure to hold the weight. Have a good search on google for options, I decided it was too hard.

We are building a pergola with flowering and evergreen climbers to make a showerproof roof and hooks to attach a tarp underneath to keep heavy rain off the furniture when needed.

We put one on our wood store about 8 years ago. As previous poster said it needs to be a strong roof. DH constructed it with a variety of layers, consult Google For this advice. We planted with sedum and a few rockery type plants

Practically, it looked lovely until weeds settled, then needed weeding. This involved a ladder. Other lovely plants moved in and it became very heavy. Eventually the water rotted the roof. It’s still there, but shored up waiting to be demolished.

The RHS has done some work on this - their garden at Harlow carr has several structures with green roofs. It looks like they have about a 10 year life before needing completely replacing (I'm basing this on watching the general decay at Harlow Carr) so I'm wondering whether you could incorporate that into your design? Make the wall structure completely self supporting and with a waterproof membrane between that and the roof?

Thank you all for your comments and tips. Need to give it some thought - but I do love them so might have to bite the bullet!
