What's eating my f*****k strawberries?

I'm lovingly and carefully growing gorgeous strawberries, never grown them before. We've picked two lots so far amazing. Then I noticed none were going missing, odd! So I bought environmentally friendly slug pellets, as there were definitely signs that slugs were eating them. I'm watching them everyday waiting for them to go nice and red but it seems a slow process. Anyway today I estimate is D day. I go up pick them for dinner tonight I'm all excited and all the red ones have gone! I start muttering (to myself) about using proper slug pellets and then I lift the fruit cages and some f***r is burrowing underneath them. What is it? The burrows is about 3 inches wide by 2-3 inches deep! I think its rats ( no signs of rat runs) if yes how do I get rid them?

Hard to say, could be rabbits if not rats?

In any case, I’d pin aviary wire under them/dig it down under the soil to stop whatever it usburriwing

Second what frostedviolets is, saying. Also trying dotting pots of mint around, if it is rats they don't like mint, but don't plant it in the ground otherwise you may end up with just mint and no strawberries!

What are your fruit cages like? I've never heard of rats eating strawberries , foxes , yes. Unless they are hungry with no chips and Macd boxes kicking around.
