Cantilever/banana parasol - any good?

I'm looking to buy one of these for a seating area of my patio. My next door neighbour bought one and I heard her say to her husband when he came home yesterday that it had fallen over twice even though they have it weighted down.

I've since read that they are useless if there's a slight breeze and they swing about too. Reluctant to spend £100+ on one plus £60 for the base if they're rubbish.

Can you add a picture of the sort of thing you are talking about?

I’ve just got one from Homebase.
The base is big and heavy so there’s no chance it will fall or blow over.
The parasol is lovely and large but yes can move round in the wind.

We have an IKEA one. No issues with stability at all. I love it, good amount of shade but not taking up the middle of the floor. I do have a couple of plants standing on the base though, but only to try and improve the look.

We've got one. It does swing about a bit but our garden is particularly breezy being open to fields on two sides.....
Doesn't top over, we've got the flat supports that sit between the legs.

Thanks for the pic. We have a cantilever one with a heavy base that you fill with water. It only topped over once but that was because it was open in a strong wind and we didn't have enough water in the base. It moves a little in a gentle breeze but it is really very good.

We filled our base with sand and a bit of water. It is super heavy.

I got one and the pole snapped in what I would call a slight gust in otherwise only light wind. Plus the umbrella moved too much. Might be ok in more sheltered garden. I bought a gazebo canopy from IKEA instead and it's been brilliant - stands up to quite fierce winds.

Which Ikea one is that @WisestIsShe? I was going to order one today.

It was just the cheap one last year. I think this is it parasol

Thighmageddon · 31/05/2020 13:02

We've got one and have the proper weights on it and it remained upright through all the storms. The weights do take up a lot of space though.

Neverendingweeds · 31/05/2020 13:12

We have one, it's weighted and screwed into the decking so it wouldn't fall BUT the actual parasol moves about constantly in the slightest of breezes! It gets annoying after a while!
