Help with conifer please!

The other day we cut down a tall tree next to our conifer. It fell onto the conifer, leaving it lopsided and v shaped. I trimmed the wonky part and now it’s just lots of exposed dead wood in the middle. Now I’m reading that it won’t grow back. Help! What to do? We can’t leave it like this!

Hubby suggested cutting it down completely and planting something else. It sounds tempting but it offers privacy. There’s NOTHING behind it and it’s a small garden so we would basically see the neighbours in their garden from the living room.

The neighbours are talking of replacing the fence come autumn but we don’t know if it will still be a low one or not. We’re also considering privacy screens...
What would you do?

Help with conifer please!

Im with your DH.
I don’t think the dead part will regrow.
I would replace with something else.

Unless they are kept on top of, conifers are a nightmare in gardens, I know they offer privacy but nothing will grow underneath them and they can get absolutely massive. The only thing I would be wary of at the moment is nesting birds. If you do decide to remove it, please leave it until the end of the nesting season.
