What’s everyone doing about their lawns if they have kids?

Mine’s only little and it’s quickly getting destroyed as my teenage sons play a form of cricket on it when I force them off screens. ItMs the time of year when I’d be telling them to avoid going on it while I scarify and feed it etc

I think you need to choose between happy kids or a perfect lawn?!

superram · 19/04/2020 14:36

Mine is growing long round the edges and is bare soil (set like concrete) in the middle. It’s unsaleable but I’d rather the kids were out there than not.

Does anyone care that they're lawns aren't perfect this year due to actually being used?!

HoffiCoffi13 · 19/04/2020 14:37

I’ve got three young children. I’m doing the same as I always do... mow it when it gets too long, otherwise they’re free to play on it. Surely no one is so bothered about perfect grass that they don’t let their children play on it?

Somewhereovertherainbow85 · 19/04/2020 14:37

Can you sacrifice your lawn this year for the sake of letting your children have fun in such awful circumstances? I’m sure you’ve got much more important worries. The lawn will grow back! The kids won’t get this time back, this will impact them for a while. Let them play!!

I had building work done last year and my lawn was less trashed than I expected. Partly because I left it long and didn't now it at all so it stood up to a bit more punishment (might also have deterred builders from keeping stuff on it)

You’re right. Even DH who is relatively obsessed with the lawn is saying just let them on it. Set concrete sounds about right, @superram. Ours is like that.

I think it’s just that I spend a lot of time in our kitchen diner, it has bifold doors and overlooks the back garden. It gives me a lot of joy looking out at the lush greenery when I’m stuck in the house. I absolutely love looking out. Doesn’t quite look the same when the lawn is all bare and grey and brown!

But you’re right. Happy kids are more important at the moment.

Ours is awful at the moment. Dh isn’t bothering to treat it or anything as he’s currently revamping the garden. We’ll get new lawn once it’s finished.

My garden is looking beautiful ,neat and tidy with every pot, ornament and light where it should be. I would much rather there were toys on the lawn and my grandchildren were playing out there, picking the flowers and knocking things over!

bettybattenburg · 19/04/2020 16:02

Mine is a mess but I'm not bothered, the garden is for relaxing and enjoying ourselves so the lawn can sort itself out.

AnotherDFSsale · 19/04/2020 16:03

Glad it's not just me. I have made the garden look amazing being off work these last few weeks- but when I take photos I don't get the grass in; it's non existent!😒 Bare mud, dirt and patchy. Awful.

HardAsSnails · 19/04/2020 16:04

Just keep mowing it every week (even if it looks like it doesn't need it) and it will be fine.
