Seen last year at Mottisfont National Trust and I wish I had noted its name as I like the way it looks around the roses - thank you for your help

Looks like a hardy geranium.

It looks like a geranium - possibly purple Cranesbill. www.rhs.org.uk/plants/details%3Fplantid%3D5330

Sorry but it looks like a Salvia (sage) to me, have you got a closer pic.? There are many different types, the same with cranesbills (geraniums) It could be either I suppose.

I love salvias they are pretty , easy to care for , Good for teas too.

Hardy geranium, in your first photo, the bottom left corner has a clearer bit of flower and leaf. There are a gazillion varieties though, read descriptions before you buy!

What time of the year was it? My cranesbill's flower earlier than the roses. The salvias around a similar time. Although it a bit like an aster in the 2nd pic. which would be later of course. Oh i don't know !!! Confused
