Hi can anyone tell me if these bugs are helpful or harmful in the garden. Keep finding them at the moment. Heres a photo with toy car for scale. They're about 3mm long. Thanks

I can’t see the photo?

Oh I see it now! Rosemary beetle?

TheMandalorian · 09/04/2020 13:26

Thanks. They are not shiny purple. More of a reddish brown sheen. I dont think they are vine weevil, but could be mistaken.

I don't know what they are, but they are not vine weevils.

Baby cockroaches maybe. Where are they.

ThomasHardyPerennial · 10/04/2020 08:37

Baby cockroaches have quite stripy bodies, can't see any stripes in op's photo.

No, not rosemary beetles, definitely not vine weevils. I don't know what they are, but I wouldn't worry about those.

In general, if it moves fast, it's likely to be a predator, and therefore good. If it moves slowly, it's prey, but even then I wouldn't kill it until is demonstrably causing harm. A lot of slow moving species (including most of our species of slugs) eat only rotten material not live plants.

Weevils are easy to distinguish from beetles - weevils have a long "nose" (rostrum). They're also (so I was told by a passionate entomologist who specialised in weevils) much more considered in their movements, unlike the reckless impulsive beetles.

Ah okay. They are all outside on the fencing and brick walls. Think they are mating. Also they have wings. Just never seen them before. 😁
