Rose help

Last year I planted a David Austin shrub rose in a large bed. Unfortunately, the shrubs behind went berserk and completely overshadowed it. It never flowered and has grown quite leggy. Can I cut it back to encourage it to grow bushier? I'm planning to sort out the other stuff in the bed tomorrow, including digging some things out so we don't get the same problem again this year.

Thanks. I'll give it a substantial pruning.

Roses are usually tough. Give it a snip, while the Forsythia are still blooming (now) and a feed and a good watering.
