Can I grow bulbs in old welly boots?

Outgrown boots with cracks in- not good enough to pass on. Can they be used as planters? What could we plant at this time of year? I'm clueless but the DCs love digging around. Thanks.

bulbs need good drainage, but yes.
depending on size you could get 2 or 3 layers in.
bottom tulip, middle daffs, top crocus.

Really? Triple layers??

mind blown

Do I just use compost to plant them?

compost mixed with sand (for drainage). and cut extra holes near the bottom so they don't fill up with water,

Fab thank you! Is now a good time of year to plant bulbs for the spring?

yes, from now until beginning of november.

add non-clumping cat litter to the compost if you have any - it is meant to be very good for drainage in small pots.

Yes, but why would you want to?

I know nothing about gardening, but my local country park use old wellies as planters in their outside cafe area so it certainly can be done.

Sounds a bit silly but I'm quite attached to a pair of yellow wellies DS has outgrown. They're not trashed, one has a small crack in the side and it seems a shame to throw them away. I think they'll make cute planters.

They remind me of Alfie's boots from the Shirley Hughes books 🙂

Grin yes I have done the same for the same reason (couldn't let go of some super cute red wellies!)

Fill the feet area with gravel and make slits about 1 inch in foot area for drainage, fill the long bit with soil. I am doing this with hyacinths
