What to plant under a hedge in a raised bed?

Hello, following some excellent advice previously, I have more questions! We have a hedge in a new raised bed (had to have the raised bed as the low wall wasn't really up to much without earth holding it up!). It means the base/trunk part of the hedge is at eye level if we sit outside. We have space to plant in front of the hedge, so I'm looking for ideas? Ideally leafy and colourful. Flowers would be a bonus! I'd wondered about lavender but DH isn't keen.

The bed is east facing, and 80% of it gets morning and overhead sun. It's well draining slightly sandy soil. The other 20% of the bed is actually behind the shed so doesn't get as much light. Is there something we could plant as a ground cover to keep weeds at bay? It won't get a lot of light and won't be visible.

We really could do with a picture of it OP. Planting things near hedges and trees can be really difficult as the hedges and trees really suck up the moisture. Lavender likes full, hot sun and well drained soil so east facing isn't ideal.

From your description, it's hard to advise so please post a pic.

Variegated ivy.

How much space is there in front of the hedge? I'm wondering if you need something drought tolerant/ requiring low nutrients as hedges can be very greedy.
