Pergola problems

We have a new pergola, installed a few months ago. I am struggling to get anything to grow up it, things keep dying out or just not flourishing. I am wondering if it is the fungicide used to treat the timber- could that be killing off the plants? Does anyone have any experience of this?

How deep is the soil at the base, if the roots are being affected by the cement that is more likely to have an effect.

It does take time and you have to have the right plant in the right place in the right soil.

The plants seem to be able to grow initially. When they get to a decent size I have been tying them against the pergola and this is when the previously healthy green leaves seem to go brown and die off. Ivy seems to be able to cope, but I have a Wisteria in a large pot that has got brown leaves which then wilt and fall off. This has been happening since I tied it against the pergola.

A grape vine which is actually about 30 cms away has been growing towards it and finally attached itself a couple of days ago. The ends where it has attached have literally gone brown and floppy. I am getting worried- what is in that wood?

I will try the water & feed, see if it helps. I think it is quite dry all over at the moment!
