see here half hour allotment and grow your own veg both are excellent for beginners. Congrats on your allotment, I've had mine since November and its fantastic.

only grow what you already buy and eat. there is no law that says that you have to grow stuff you don't like eating. I hate it when the books say 'now is a good time to get your broad beans in'. No, NEVER is a good time for me to get my broad beans in, yeuch, I HATE broad beans.

What's the rest of the allotment - bare earth? rampant weeds?
