Have I sold 16 people a pig in a poke?

Name changed as this is very outing.
The facts: Saw YouTube video about growing tomatoes from a slice of tomato, had some v tasty cherry ones from supermarket so planted 3 slices with low expectations. 3 weeks later, 54 seedlings, transferred to larger pots expecting to lose half, 52 survived - nearly all grew looking super healthy - had 49 tomato plants. Couldn't possibly use all so planted some, gave away some and had 28 tomato plants left. Got the bright idea of selling them on our local group for 50p each - sold all bar 3 which I offered some to my much older, much wiser chum and he said " Oh, no thanks as they are probably F1s so won't produce anything". Have I sold 16 people a pig in a poke? Never mind friends who think I am a great grower Blush

EssentialHummus.. that's what i did too! Taped up by raised beds. Used up 2 rolls! It has faded now but still does the job. The box in the photo I sent hasn't got any on. I need to get taping again!

Bob.. it's great to have this forum. I've been on a 40+ ttc thread for ages and now i've discovered there's a gardening page i'm thrilled! We can share successes and tips Smile

That's beautiful bob!

PiggyPokkyFool · 04/07/2019 23:32

Beautiful flowers Bob - I tackle my slug problem with a torch and a will of iron at the seedling stage but lost both parsley and thyme when I planted out my carefully nurtured seedlings only to have them munch to 'where the hell are they' stage. More coloured glads coming out all the time and raspberries delicious despite the odd bit of sunburn.
Roll on produce!!!!!

Well done bob!

I planted out the last of the tomatoes (and a stray courgette) yesterday. Fox made off with one, hopefully the others will make it.

They don't eat it I think (at this stage anyway... I sometimes find nibbled pears from the neighbours' tree), but they do dig around in smelly compost and the plants are little enough that they don't always survive it. I've sent DH to wee out there, usually helps!

I've had to give tomatoes a rest for a couple of years as we've had rampant potato blight in these parts which has affected them. Hoping if I leave it a while the problem will go away. Trying again next year I think.

My little olive tree is absolutely smothered in flowers this year. Last year i got one solitary olive, which actually managed to ripen and turn black. This year I have my fingers crossed for a bumper crop (well a small handful anyway) Smile

Hi everyone, it all sounds fab! Beautiful blooms Bob!
Here are some photos of my best flowers...A Hebe Caledonia which the bees love and a Gerbena Garvinia which you'd think they love but don't bother with at all, and a Tradescantia which is doing really well in total shade!

@PiggyPokkyFool... Gosh that's a fiery number! Looks divine! Smile

I think I might turn into a raspberry - we are picking close to a half kilo a day - so far I have had for breakfast with yogurt, for lunch in a fruit salad and with an Aero choc mousse for dessert after dinner.
May start to look like this only redder ....

I have to grow blight resistant tomatoes here, so I can't join the fun of 'tomato bingo' unfortunately, but just wanted to add that as a child my Dm and her family had an outside privvy. Apparently the most wonderful tomatoes grew next to the privvy, completely self seeded! I have also seen at a not very interesting school visit to a sewage farm. At least they are not cat shit courgettes Grin

Ah, well done bob!

I'm not at all squeamish about the shit tomatoes, nope, not me... Grin.

Our chickens planted some tomatoes for us one year. They pooped the seeds in the coop and they were watered by the overflow from the water bowl. The plants grew along the chain link fence panel and wound itself though so they fianally stood nearly 8 feet tall. Lots of nice tomatoes on it too.
The chcikens also planted a pumpkin vine too, similar situation Dd found it with a big yellow flower, so we spent the summer waiting to see how big it would get. I was small enough to fit in your hand, but turned a lovely orange.
I can't grow stuff, but so long as I leave things alone they will grow.

elephantoverthehill · 09/07/2019 22:09

With my Dm it was during WW2, so I guess any food went.

BooseysMom · 11/07/2019 09:30

Bob..thanks Smile..i can't believe how well it's doing considering it has no sun and is in heavy clay!

Good news about your toms! Grin

nettie434 · 12/07/2019 08:13

If I had bought a tomato plant which and grew but didn’t flower, I would just assume it was me so you are probably safe Grin

In fact it will cement your reputation as people will say ‘Oh, I wish I had green fingers like PiggyPokkyFool. She grew such delicious tomatoes last year and I bought a plant from her but I couldn’t get it to fruit at all.’

I thought F1 plants did not produce viable seeds at all so this thread has been a revelation to me and am in awe of Bobtheduvet and everyone else growing tomatoes from the seeds of a supermarket tomato.

PiggyPokkyFool · 13/07/2019 15:49

Today is a good day - the cucamelons in the -repurposed halloween cauldron- hanging basket are full of flowers. I am very excited and I picked fruit at 8.30 this morning for breakfast. The tomatoes are full of flowers and it looks a lot like a scene from Day of the Triffids in our front gardens and I have lots of tiny cucumbers.
On a less happy note my red currant bush has been affected by leaf blister aphids for about 4 years. It doesn't affect the fruit but looks so awful(and I'm a bit worried about it spreading) that I am taking off branches as they finish cropping and am planning to cut it back to about 2 feet tall in the hope of sorting it - I believe they overwinter in the soil so this time next year I may end up in the same place but with a bush 1/10 of the size of this year.
@nettie434 - that would be good!
Amazing how this thread has taken off given it was started from the worry of having cheated multiple people out of 50p Grin

Aphids are in plagues this year. And where have all the ladybirds gone? I've only seen two so far this summer!
