Have I sold 16 people a pig in a poke?

Name changed as this is very outing.
The facts: Saw YouTube video about growing tomatoes from a slice of tomato, had some v tasty cherry ones from supermarket so planted 3 slices with low expectations. 3 weeks later, 54 seedlings, transferred to larger pots expecting to lose half, 52 survived - nearly all grew looking super healthy - had 49 tomato plants. Couldn't possibly use all so planted some, gave away some and had 28 tomato plants left. Got the bright idea of selling them on our local group for 50p each - sold all bar 3 which I offered some to my much older, much wiser chum and he said " Oh, no thanks as they are probably F1s so won't produce anything". Have I sold 16 people a pig in a poke? Never mind friends who think I am a great grower Blush

The answer to your OP is very evident, how very marvellous a harvest from your tomato slice plant! Star Star Star Star Star

So these started life back in, maybe, early April?

Taking around 5 months from seed to harvest?

buddinggrower · 11/09/2019 13:17

Went off in searxh of more tomato growing info, discovered there are different lengths of seed-harvest strains (if thats the name for them).

It seems preferable to grow from seed than buying the plants as more variety!

I'm so going to do this.

PiggyPokkyFool · 11/09/2019 13:20

They started life on Wednesday 10th April circa 12.30. Feeling a bit peckish I was making some lunch when I noticed one of my delicious supermarket tomatoes was looking decidedly sorry for itself and rather than give it to my worms I decided to go down a different road and here we are.
I harvested the first batch on Saturday 1st September on our return for holiday - if we had been here it would have been August so I would say 4.5 months from seed to plate.
I do really really appreciate the support I have received on here . I must confess I had great pleasure Blush presenting elderly knowitall gentleman with a punnet on Sunday and commiserating on the distressing news that all of his had sacomed to blight.

@buddinggrower - you don't need a greenhouse - mine started on an inside window cill and progress to repurposed toy boxes beautiful growing containers in the front garden.
Off to photograph some of the lovely cucumbers at various stages of development - we have had 6 so far I including hiding marrow sized one)

Budding you can also use a 2/5l bottle or even a a see-through umbrella as a greenhouse, we’re all about the hacks here WinkGrin.

buddinggrower · 11/09/2019 13:55

Sorry, OP, what did you hand him on a plate, oh yes, sorry, quality tomatoes! Grin

TinklyLittleLaugh · 11/09/2019 14:25

Really enjoying this thread. I’ve not grown any veg for a couple of years but I’m inspired to start again in spring.

How are you all dealing with your gluts? Tomato sauce, drying them in the oven? Swapping with neighbours? Or are you managing to scoff them all?

PiggyPokkyFool · 11/09/2019 15:14

Freezing raspberries and blackberries on baking trays for 90 minutes then putting into freezer bags.
Eating all beans, strawberries, tomato, cucumbers and cucamelons that we don't share.

What a fantastic thread. All your fears were unfounded and the person who dismissed your efforts was proved wrong. I can't belive how productive your tomato slice was. Congrafukations!,

BooseysMom · 13/09/2019 14:46

Hi Piggy, those tomatoes look fabulous. This sun is doing wonders for them.
Here at last are photos of my tomatoes and pumpkin...

Is it possible to hang the supports. Maybe by putting a hook on a fence and using twine to attach the plants main stems to the hook? Canes only seem to be as sturdy as the soil/depth you stick them in? Confused

Feel like this thread is an actual allotment with all the pictures of ripening fruits of labours posted all over!

buddinggrower · 14/09/2019 11:51

Please do tell where you got your alpine and hanging strawberries from, varieties, etc. I'd like to start something similar for next year.

Is there a particular type or just any strawberry plants will do?

Also, can one plant strawberries, like the tomato slices?!? Hmm....

PiggyPokkyFool · 14/09/2019 12:25

The 'normal' ones are called Lucy.
The alpines I bought at Homebase and we have been working it out and reckon 10 years + they have been in that hanging basket (or actually a hanging basket as I buy my hanging baskets at Poundland and they 'only' tend to last approx. 7 years) They were just solid as Alpine strawberries.
Growing tomatoes from slices, buying hanging baskets from Poundland, repurposing the children's Halloween cauldrons and toy boxes into growing containers - I am one classy lady Wink

Wow @BooseysMom - never grown a pumpkin and he is a fine fellow and tomatoes looking good to.
@buddinggrower and anyone else that is interested - we bought some bits from these people at The Edible Garden Show and they were excellent.

Omg i've just lost my whole msg! ..here goes again..

Thanks @EssentialHummus..love the wild tomato look.Grin We've got one like that too..see pic

Thanks @BobTheDuvet. Smile.
That's the danger of not staking! We have a north-facing garden and the wind blows strong between the houses. I've lost many a tall leggy plant thanks to that pesky wind!

Thanks @PiggyPokkyFool.. i have a big green one too and have removed some leaves to let the sun ripen it. See pic

Omg again! Just lost another msg this time about raspberries. Bloody wifi!

@buddinggrower..i think you may have the solution ..thank you! My raspberry canes are pulling the wooden canes out of the ground and the ground is so hard it's impossible to get them to stay in.

Also something is eating the leaves..hopefully the pics will attach properly. Has anyone got any advice please? I've never grown raspberries before. Thanks Smile

buddinggrower · 14/09/2019 15:03

I heard pumpkins have hammocks!???

buddinggrower · 14/09/2019 15:09

Just looking at your raspberry plants, I have been thinking of those racks that go on top of doors with a row of hooks on them! Surely this would.hang from the top of your height fence easily and then tie twine from each hook? Hammering nails in the top or screwing in some screws would do the sams, but it could split the top wood

I want to grow raspberries too now. Its the thought of eating all these lovely fruits!
