East of England into raised beds....

Do we think it's safe to plant out courgettes and tomatoes into pots?!

Mine have been out for two weeks now (same part of country as you) and seem happy enough! Tomatoes will go out this weekend (but only because I didn't get around to it this weekend!)

frogsoup · 07/05/2019 11:53

*last weekend, even

derekthe1adyhamster · 07/05/2019 11:53

I'm in the South, no way would I plant tenders out until the end of may. The wind is still too cold imo as well as the nights

derekthe1adyhamster · 07/05/2019 11:55

Grin maybe because I'm on the coast I have this problem

CatMomma · 07/05/2019 11:57

I'm in the north and accidentally planted a tonne of seeds out in pots which was rapidly followed by 2 rounds of snow a couple of months ago. Everything seems to have sprouted now, just have to stop the cat pulling my spring onions upGrin

I'd say your courgettes are probably safe as you're further down south.

Tigger83 · 07/05/2019 12:38

Thanks all! I usually have them out by now but the weather feels so weird that it's hard to know

My tomatoes & beans have been out for a week now (I'm in Yorkshire) but I'm not putting my aubergine out yet. We had hail a couple of weeks ago, I have had to put it into a bigger pot though as it wasn't growing. Nights have been close to freezing most of the last week here.

notatwork · 07/05/2019 12:46

Cast n'er a clout til May be out.

Leave it a few weeks OP.

magpie24 · 07/05/2019 12:51

I've just planted some seeds directly into a gro bag. I'm in London. Are they doomed to failure??

FloraMcDougall · 07/05/2019 15:59

Two of mine (plants) from Aldi got frosted on Sunday - SW 😡 the one night I didn’t put them to bed 😂 all the others from garden centre are fine.

Queenfreak · 07/05/2019 20:02

I've buggered up a few tomato plants already this year. I got duped by the warm weather a few weeks ago.
Courgettes are so ready or will need repotting.
Aubergines need repotting, peas are ready to go out.
Strawberries have been out for a while and are coming along lovely.
It's my first year- and I've been quite enthusiastic you should see my lounge Grin

Lovemusic33 · 07/05/2019 20:14

Flora I lost mine to frost at the weekend too. Not putting anything else out for a week or so.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 07/05/2019 20:17

I lost my two doing beautifully indoors courgettes last year to frost at the end of May when I planted them out. I’m waiting until June this year.

AwdBovril · 07/05/2019 21:26

To be fair, I spent about about a fortnight carefully putting my beans & tomatoes out every morning & taking them in every night. And rescuing them from hail. Had to put the beans out permanently as they needed staking as now over a foot high.

Tigger83 · 08/05/2019 06:48

I compromised and put half out yesterday as they're getting out of control in the green house! Got spares just in case. Peas and beans all sown direct and doing really well so fingers crossed we won't get a hard frost. Think most stuff is big enough for a nip of cold 🤞🏻

OP posts:
EleanorReally · 08/05/2019 06:54

My dm always reckons after 21st May for planting out.

EleanorReally · 08/05/2019 06:55

or potting out

RhubarbIsEvil · 08/05/2019 07:02

I planted out my runner beans yesterday and the rest are still in pots. I leave them out overnight but I can always bring them in if it looks cold. My local garden visitor place has only planted out beans and potatoes so far.

ExpletiveDelighted · 08/05/2019 07:05

I always wait till the last week in May, central southern England. We do quite often get late frosts here until then, its been close a few nights this last week.

BrexitBirgit · 08/05/2019 07:12

Same here. I have lost many to late frosts in May in the past I now wait till mid-May (the 'Ice Saints days' , I'm from Germany). I'm in the east of England.
See: www.google.com/search?q=ice+saints&oq=ice+saints
So my courgettes and tomatoes will go out for good at the weekend. But I'm way behind (lazy) with seeds, should really have put some of those in by now!

Tigger83 · 09/05/2019 19:42

Well hail yesterday and today and they're all still just about coping 😳

purplecat27 · 09/05/2019 23:50

I've got tomatoes and courgettes out after being led astray by that gorgeous Easter weekend! I've been fleecing them every night since last Friday, courgettes are looking a little better than tomatoes but both have suffered a bit, I'd wait (North West England).

Georgiemcgeorgeface · 12/05/2019 08:44

I'm going to go for it (I think) and put some beans courgettes and cucumber out today since the weather forecast looks great for the next week (Yorkshire). I've got spare plants indoors and in a cold frame just in case.

Lovemusic33 · 12/05/2019 08:48

My tomatoes went out yesterday and they don’t look happy.
Beans are looking ok (I do have a few spare planted indoors just incase). My window sills look much better ow most things have gone out.
