Trachelospermum jasminoides - do I need a trellis or will it scramble up the wall by itself?

(and by wall - I mean a wooden fence)

I have put wire across mine to help it climb (horizontally across the fence).

I also have wire across the fence to support mine.

I have a wooden fence with a chicken wire large mesh across it for the jasmine to be trained along. I spent hours threading it through but it's growing however it wants and ignoring the wire and doing it's own thing.

So I'm going to need something to start it off?

I grew mine up a metal tripod trellis from Wilkins or similar until it was fall enough to reach the chicken wire

I don't think it has aerial roots or suckers, at least mine doesn't, it just winds up and around things, so yes it will need help at the start

Yes it does need something to climb up, and you will need to tie it in to get it started. I didn't do this and now have a pretty unsightly bushy thing!

My bush is nicely trailing over the trellis and has a pleasant, delicate scent.
