Best companion plant for clumping bamboo?

I've recently planted three 5ft clumping bamboo plants to provide screening along the back fence. The bed looks quite sparse and i'd like to put something in to provide ground cover. It's a relatively shady spot and i know bamboo are thirsty so it would need to be drought resistant. I've had hostas recommended but I'm plagued by slugs and snails and don't use pesticides so have never successfully grown hostas. Any other suggestions.?

Some ferns do quite well in dry shade.

Vinca?

What works in my garden are: Hakonechloa macra (a grass), Polystichum polyblepharum (a fern) and Skimmia japonica 'Kew White'

Thanks for these suggestions - I'd quite like a bit of colour during Summer as all my other shrubs have finished flowering by May and the garden looks a bit green.
