I’m hoping to make some progress with my garden this year - it’s a south-west facing corner plot with a “wedge” shaped area to the east where I’m looking to make a paved area, with a tree in the centre as a feature - not my garden, but something similar to the attached photo.

I like the idea of a fruit tree, perhaps a pear or a plum but I am also open to other suggestions, perhaps something that will provide year round interest? The ground here has a fair amount of clay.

I’ve got a cherry tree in the front garden that does well (although the birds always get the cherries before me!) and my neighbour has a fig tree that also does well.

Please can you suggest any suitable trees that won’t grow so big they damage the patio?

Thank you Flowers

I’d suggest an Amelanchier, they are a lovely shrub/tree. At this time of year they have delicate white flowers with young bronze coloured leaves, which then turn green. In the Autumn the leaves turn back to a golden red colour and it has berries.
Growth can be 5 metres+ but it is quite slow growing.

Thanks BeeBumble2 - that’s very pretty, although having looked on the RHS website, they can grow up to 8m which would be too big for the space I have.

Any other recommendations please?
