Fertiliser

I am a new gardener and basically put new plants in a border which had been dug over after a low wall had been rebuilt. I had spent ages agonising over what to put in, but in the end just planted whatever I fancied from a garden centre. A few weeks later nothing is yet dead, but the slugs have snacked on one a lot.

Anyway I have been reading up and lots of sites suggest adding fertliser or lime depending on the plant during the growing season. I have a free supply of horse manure and ashes. Can I use these? Should I use these? The manure will contain lots of grass seeds I imagine.

Spread a load of crushed eggshells around the one that is being eaten by slugs, it helps to deter them a bit.

Everything else - just buy some nice cheap fertiliser granules (Growmore or similar) and use according to the instructions on the packet.
