*tunnel* along boundary fence - what is it for??

Hi all

I viewed a lovely house yesterday backing onto farmlands. It's on a hill and there's an embankment wall at the back. There was this ditch all song the one boundary fence, with some sort of covering on it, but the covering wasn't sturdy or metal. More like a mulch covering but clearly covering something - I was thinking maybe a run of some sort but what could be using it?

The agent didn't know but I'm so nosey (and love the house!) that I really want to know what it's for. Could it be badgers? I wouldn't think hedgehogs as they would want to get out and about and not be in some sort of tunnel.

Any one had anything like this before?

TIA

Drainage ditch?

Bubbles121 · 03/07/2018 08:01

I did wonder that but there is a small brick wall on one side and a fence on the other - if it was drainage wouldn't it be flat so the garden could run into it. Garden on slight slope so wouldn't run into it naturally it would run down and through the actual gate.

Have you got a photo?

I shall get one tomorrow when DP goes back to look at it and post it.

It's written in to some planning agreements that if the new development will obstruct a wildlife "path"then alternative arrangements need to be made - maybe this is one of them?

I don't think it's a new house - it's not on a development at all. But I did wonder if it was something like that - although I can't see what it could possibly be that would use it or why it would need to be covered. Do badgers need a covered tunnel?

Incredibly boring update - it was the site of an old conifer hedge that had just had the bottom layer of hedge mulch up and cover it. Pretty disappointed at the lack of my badgers....
