Have seen it with big open pink flowers too, but no idea what it's called. It's very thorny, on closer inspection I think it's some type of rose?

It is a rose, if it has yellow flowers ( it looks pale in the photo) it could be Canary Bird, or a type of rambling rose.

Yes it’s a rose

Where was it growing? Looks like Rosa rugosa to me, often seen growing wild in hedgerows.

white dog rose....is that the same as rosa rugosa?

I've a pink dog rose and it smells so pretty, but it is prickly AF!!

Pumpkin1975 · 31/05/2018 21:55

Or Rosa canina, dog rose 😊

It was growing at the side of the road but I've also seen these planted as low wide hedges of sorts in retail parks and the likes. The pink ones are lovely, really big fuschia flowers all over. If I could find out what they are would love some in my garden

i am sure it would be rosa rugosa....I looked them both up after @pumpkin1975 's id and mine is surely a rugosa

I have mine fixed to a trellis up the wall round the window of the wash house, but I hack it back really hard most years, so it doesn't take over as it is the best sunny spot in the garden and I would have nowhere to sit if it ran wild.

IIRC mine did not do an awful lot for the first year or two but then it really took off, so if you wanted a hedge type affair a few planted in a row with wire/posts to support surely would not take too long to look really handsome.

Quite like that idea myself actually...maybe put some along the drive here!
