What to add to soil at this time of year.

I'd like to add something to the soil on my vegetable patch and flower bed before planting the growing season.

Both have quite poor soil, the flower patch in particular which was created from waste land.

I'm time poor and a beginner gardener so something easy would be perfect if such a thing exists.

Can anyone help please?

Spent compost (if you have any from last year's pots and tubs) is a good soil conditioner. Otherwise a good economical thing to buy is a growbag or two, and use that compost on the beds. You can sprinkle some Growmore or blood, fish and bone fertiliser, they are fairly cheap from places like Wilko or B & M, and fork that into the surface.
