Cabbage Collars

I've seen gardeners using these on TV round cabbages, broccoli etc.

Wondering if I should use them too.

Are they made from something specific or can I make my own out of milk cartons or similar?

they stop cabbage flies laying their eggs at the base of your cabbages. depends on how fond you are of cabbage! you can use other stuff but it's best if it's a bit porous so the cabbage roots don't dry out or get too soggy round the neck (depending on teh weather). carpet or underlay works, or you could buy something from a charity shop and cut it up.

I don't bother and have never had a problem - but please don't blame me if you do!
