Apparently you can use the gel from disposible nappes instead of expensive water-retaining gel crystals in the compost of hanging baskets, to reduce watering. Split open the nappy and mix the gel with the compost or cut up the nappies and put at the bottom of the basket. (If they have been wee'd on, all the better - good for the plants.)
Sounds like a tip from Viz.
Haven't tried it myself - no baby and no hanging baskets

Can't see why they wouldn't work... Will give it a whirl. Thanks for the tip

what a great idea bodkin. No babies any more but will buy some economy nappies next time I am in Sainsburys.

funnypeculiar · 18/04/2007 19:31

genius - will defn try ... are there not unpleasant chemicals in them too, though that will knock plants out??

PanicPants · 18/04/2007 19:32

I'm going to try that! Thanks!

PanicPants · 18/04/2007 19:33

i thought this would be a warning about them falling on babies heads or something...
lol

TheWoman · 21/04/2007 15:57

me too! good tip, though.

zephyrcat · 21/04/2007 15:57

lol I thought it was going to be about baskets falling on babies too!

DeviousDaffodil · 21/04/2007 15:59

Can you put babies in your hangign baskets so they don't get in the way?
Damn nuisance when you are cutting the grass, crawling everywhere.

NappiesGalore · 21/04/2007 16:07

good point devious. theyd prob only fall out a couple of times before they learn not to qwriggle too much...

lucyellensmum · 21/04/2007 16:07

seems like a rollicking good idea to me - who said disposables were environmentally unsound!

zephyrcat · 21/04/2007 16:09

Also, if you get them swinging enough they might just fall asleep in them giving you a couple of hours peace!

NappiesGalore · 21/04/2007 18:04

i like your style zeph. like a low budget sanity saver AKA fisher price swing seat.
