Laying gravel along side of house?

There is a gap filled with soil and dirt between the patio path and the side of the house. Are there any issues regarding damp that might arise if I lay gravel along that gap or am I better off planting flowers or shrubs? It looks really messy and full of weeds? What's a cheap way of making it look nice?

Laying a weed membrane and gravel on top will be fine. You can also rake a slight slope away from the house before you lay the gravel too.
