How to keep bottom of hedge free from ivy weeds and nettles

I have a large hedge which I like and keep tidy but it has ivy nettles and other weeds growing through it from next door which poke out underneath. Obviously I keep cutting these back but they grow faster than the hedge. How can I get rid of these without killing the hedge?

Thanks

Terran and wood chip, or just a very thick later of wood chip.

should be terran ?

I have exactly same problem .Plus sycamore seedlings which bury themselves in the mulch I use .Maybe woodchip would be better than the leaf mould I use ?
