Hi
Have got a geranium and a couple of others from diy store today.
it says to sread out roots and plant up to the crown.Trouble is i really dont know which way up to put it.
One end is brown and quite muddy covered in roots and the other end looks like greeny yellow beansprout roots.I have planted one with the muddy end in and the green out of the ground-any novice advise very very welcome as i really would like it to grow !

Fakeblonde, you got it right. The greeny yellow bit is the start of the stem(s). I've bought dried periannals in the past nad they have mainly grown but not as well as a potted plant in the first year and some did nothing at all.
This time of year you can usually buy small pot plants from garden centres and Diy stores for £1. These, I find are very good valve.
