What was the loud rattling sound in my garden?

I left my window open last night and was suddenly woken just before 5 by the loudest rattling sound.

Any idea what it could have been? I can't think of a bird that rattles, and rattle snakes are not present here are they?

Thanks

Was it an animal rattling something rather than rattling itself? Like a squirrel trying to get into your bird feeder for example.

A woodpecker?

Frogs can sound a bit rattle-like, they can certainly sound very odd?

It was definitely not something rattling an object. Hmm,could be a woodpecker I suppose or frog. There are woodlands nearby and I occasionally hear owls at night
Thanks

Red partridges can sound sort of machine like. Could sound like rattling?
