How do I deadhead?

I know it will be an obvious answer to many. But I need to deadhead bacopa and osteospernum, as I understand that if I do, they will flower all summer. To date, I've been pulling the brown or shrivelled petals out. But should I be cutting the stems?

My Mum always used to say that a flower's not going to grow out of the old stem so remove it all.

yes cut, don't pull. And I agree with user's mum - take the old stem off down to the nearest leaves, or the old stem will die back and you'll have lots of brown ends.. For bacopa I would just go over them now and then with scissors - you may remove some existing or coming flowers, but you'll get a mass of new ones in return.
