I'm clearing part of the garden for a new patio and came across these on top of the soil. I thought they were rocks at first. Can anyone ID?

Ranunculus corms ?

Defo corm bulbs of some kind I think

More likely cyclamen corms I think. Replant on the SURFACE of soil, as they don't like to be buried, and water in. Should have pink or white flowers, probably in late summer/autumn.

The thin curly 'thread' at the bottom should turn into a seed pod; round, like a small Malteaser, and when it is ripe and dry, the top should open to reveal seeds; the small seeds can be slightly sticky, and a triangular shape. Scatter them around to get more 'babies', but again, don't plant deeply; may take a year or two to become new corms:

(So, Yes, you could think of them as Magic Beans!)

Ferguson that's it! Thank you both for taking a look and thanks for the planting advice. We found some more so will leave them where they are and look forward to some lovely flowers.
