a shallow excavation you make in the soil: www.bbc.co.uk/gardening/basics/techniques/propagation_sowingoutdoors1.shtml

yes, you make lines in the soil where you want to put the seeds, those are drills.

OP, if you were planting them in a row, next to each other you'd make a V shaped drill. If you are planting them in two or more close rows, you make a flat bottomed drill, like a mini trench ie:

V shaped:
. . . . . . . . . . . .

flat-bottomed:

. . . . . . . . . . . .

. . . . . . . . . . . .

The easies way to make drill for sowing is to lightly water the soil and press a bamboo cane or a piece of wood into the soil. That way you get a nice straight line. Put in the seed and lightly cover with soil. That way when they start to germinate you can tell which are the seeds you planted and which are weeds. Unless you have managed to sow very thinly it is a good idea to thin out the seeds once they start to grow. Eyebrow tweezers make the job easy.

Just a small point, sow seeds as deep as twice their longest length/width. So peas go twice as deep as a pea. Do not sow lettuce seeds at this depth, they need to be just under the surface.

I teach hort and the most common reason for bad germination is putting seeds far too deep. Deep drills worries me! What are you sowing?
