Will my little herb plugs die from chilly nights if I plant them out today?

because I don't have the time, space or the pots to pot them on today. Lazy gardener alert.

I have parsley, mint, winter savory, chives, dill and fennel - all around 10-15cm tall.

I'm in the SW.

Thank you knowledgeable gardening MNers

They should be ok, plant them somewhere south or southwest facing so they are sheltered from cold.

They might've OK where you are. They wouldn't where we live. Have you been hardening them off?

sunnyhills · 28/04/2017 08:08

I guess you could put a sheet over them at night ?

loverlybunchofcoconuts · 28/04/2017 08:12

Normally fine this time of year, but we've had a couple of nights down to 2 C or below this week, I don't think I'd risk them in that, would give it another week or two (put them out for some of the day tho, to help herden them off).

But if its not so cold down in sw, may be OK.

can you harden them off for a while by putting them out during the day and bringing them back in at night? It'll give them a better start in the garden.

SmallVera · 28/04/2017 08:18

Thanks folks. Their spot is west facing... I could cover them tonight. It's forecast to be cloudy with lows of 12 degrees tonight so I might get away with it.

I could harden them off but I'm concerned that there's not much nutrition left in their little plug pots to leave them in there for a few more days Confused

it will check them for a while, but they do sound like they need potting up soon. If only there was a bank holiday or something coming up?

Pay a child to pot them on?

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 28/04/2017 09:23

I think they'll be fine. It's warming up now anyway.

JT05 · 28/04/2017 09:25

Plant them out, but make mini cloches, from plastic bottles, to pop over them at night.

pansydePotter · 28/04/2017 09:37

I put my herb pots out last week and the are fine. They had got congested in the little pots so I think they were ready.

SmallVera · 28/04/2017 10:12

Mini cloches - YES!

My basil plug plant died from cold on my kitchen window ledge this week inside. Old house, double glazing not allowed!

I haven't planted anything outside yet this year but it is supposed to warm up now. We had snow on Tuesday and Wednesday of this week.
