Evergreen plant for privacy in small front gardern

I would really value some help in choosing an evergreen plant for my front garden. Semi-detached house with small front garden (approx 2 metres from bay window to pavement) that abuts the pavement. There is a hedge that separates our garden from next door and then continues at right angles to separate our garden from the pavement (hedges are approx 1 metre high). I am looking for a tallish plant to put in the garden near the hedge next to the pavement to try and block the view of a large van that is permanently parked across the street! Any ideas?

Small standard tree/shrub? You can get things like ceanothus pruned as a standard, it would take a while to grow it but it could also be done yourself.

Does it really have to be an evergreen? A small deciduous tree like a crab apple would be nicer to look at and would let more light into your house during the winter.

I have always found it best to distract from a bad view rather than attempt to block it out using evergreens.

Don't plant leylandii

Wow, the ceanothus is stunning. I just looked at google images so will now read up about it. It doesn't have to be evergreen, I just want to disguise the van and naively assumed the best way was with evergreen. The council have cut down a few trees on the stretch outside my house so I am keen to make the front of my house more private and more green!

what about a laurel hedge?

ceanothus is brilliant - I love it.
I would also suggest a red robin tree - they're evergreen too and will give you immediate height.
