oh!

Would she be happy doing cress inside? Its a bit nippy to be fannying about in the mud!

mrsvern · 23/01/2007 13:30

how patient is she to see them grow? Would planting now for stuff to surface later in spring do?
Just trying to think of something other than cress indoors

ipodthereforipoor · 23/01/2007 13:32

broad bean ina jam jar with blotting paper thing - cant remember the details but i rmeber doing it at school. Grows quite quickly

KathyMCMLXXII · 23/01/2007 13:32

what about herbs indoors?
(Might as well do something useful!)

Aloha · 23/01/2007 13:32

Definitely cress indoors.

moondog · 23/01/2007 13:33

Bulbs

Aloha · 23/01/2007 13:33

You can grow it in the shape of her initial. That's fun.

nailpolish · 23/01/2007 13:33

i was thinking about a mixture of seeds and border plants, so shes not bored with waiting for seeds to grow

(i know feck all about gardening)

and i know its cold, dd1 doesnt mind!

No, don't do it now. There is frost due and it will kill your plants.

nailpolish · 23/01/2007 13:34

is itnot late for bulbs?

Try this website:

BBC Gardening for Children

We've planted a tobacco plant and will bung it outside when the cold snap is over and done with !!

ipodthereforipoor · 23/01/2007 13:38

bottle garden

nailpolish · 23/01/2007 13:40

yes you are right, i ll do stuff indoors for now

I would go and buy some cheap pansies and let her plant them. Tell her it is too cold for seeds outside and that they need warmth to grow. Then show her how cress grows inside

nailpolish · 23/01/2007 13:41

that sounds like a good idea mrsvern, ta

My son is 2.4 and knows now what seeds need to grow as we have been talking and doing it for ages. They are never too young to learn stuff like this IMHO

Hallgerda · 26/01/2007 09:19

Try fruit pips/seeds or bits of ginger root on the kitchen windowsill - OK, they don't always work, but they are free and good fun to try, and unless your kitchen gets really cold at night it doesn't matter much when you plant them.

Carrot ends in shallow dish of water? Watch it grow roots?

Hallgerda · 26/01/2007 09:57

Carrot ends are nice - you end up with something looking like a small desert island with a palm tree. None of mine ever grew roots though. You can do parsnips the same way for a bit of variety.
