small hardy plants to go in pots in shade?

I know nothing about gardening I don't even have a garden! but would like to have some plants outside my front door either in pots or hanging baskets. It gets no sun what so ever so they need to be suitable for shade and hardy preferably due to me not having a clue how to look after them! And also not grow too tall or wide as they'll be in pots.

Any recommendations?

I should say I am slowly working my way through the shady thread on here but having to research each one mentioned to see if they stay small or grow large and if they're hardy so it's taking ages as there's so many posts. I will keep going though but just hoping an expert with be able to reel off some ideas for me.

I have a very shady area inbetween two 6 ' fences where I have some pots .

I think it's a weed really but I like the way it sprawls and survives !
I've also got violas .

Hellebores do well in shade with damp soil and I think don't grow to big. They come in all sorts of colours with evergreen leaves. However they don't bloom until late winter (I think). Depending on pot size maybe some lily of the valley, bluebells, snowdrops? All for next year though now.

If you're looking for a summer display, begonias or impatiens are good. Hydrangeas bigger but would bloom each year, or camellias are lovely. A rose? Some do ok in a bit of shade. That thread is great, sure you'll get inspiration!

I have just this month had ten delivered, I'm very excited. I am still learning though , it looks from that link like maybe I was a bit off on the damp soil. There is a really good website OP, can't link right now but I think if you google plants for shade it should come up. Huge range but a bit pricey I believe.

Things I have in pots in my north-facing garden:

• Hostas work really well in pots - stops the slugs getting to them!

• All kind of mint - there are some lovely white variegated varieties. I have a dish with a white one, chives and tiarella, which looks lovely.

• Dodecatheons. See hostas re: slugs.

• Shade-tolerant clematis, growing up a wood teepee

• Dogwood, with pulmonaria and primulas underneath

• Acers. These look fab in pots.

• Pratia pendunculata. This is a trial. It is an utter thug in the garden, so I'm not putting it in the soil. Hoping I can contain it in a pot. It's tiny, so ideal for underplanting.

Hellebores are lovely - you can never have too many of them. But they do look a bit boring from May to about November.

Heucheras do well in pots and you can get trailing varieties that can go in a hanging basket.
