Help! I need to move some irises in my garden this weekend - how do I do it?

I have a patch of v gorgeous irises in my garden that I need to move on Sunday as they are in the way of a new bit of terrace and will get trampled on by builders' boots. They are in need of a separation anyway, as far as I can see. Would it be possible for me to lift them, and then just let them sit in our (dryish) shed for a few weeks while I work out where I want them? Or do I need to separate them and replant them asap? And if I do separate them do I just use a fork to lever them apart? Really, really could do with some good advice, I don't have any of my gardening books here and haven't done this before. They are such lovely flowers I would hate to lose them.

Hi, so long as you take a chunk of soil with them, you could pot them up or use an old compost bag or bin bag rolled down a bit and store them in the shed that way or sheltered spot in garden better. Just don't let them dry out. Hope this helps.
