I kill everything I've ever put into the ground, so my garden is basically a lot of dead plants or weeds, dunno which. So I'm thinking I'll just cover the beds with stones or something for now. But I've a big party at the start of May and I'd like some colour. I'm thinking containers and hanging baskets. Is it too late to plant them myself? Any recommendations on what plants will flowee by then? I was also thinking of putting just greenery into pots, like a spider plant type of thing? I don't have a huge budget so I don't want to waste money because I'm clueless. Garden gets a bit of morning and afternoon sun. I think it's east facing but can't be sure! Any advice or recommendations would be welcome.

Thanks I'll look at those and your blog. Does cyclamen flower this early?

Yes, they flower early spring and go dormant late spring and in the summer

Get violas, there are lots of lovely Spring colours out there, and they will carry on until autumn if you water and dead head. Put a small trailing ivy in for interest too.
You could put herbs into pots for greenery/interest. Try thyme, rosemary, lavender, chives and parsley. You can get small plug plants and cram them in together. I don't think spider plants will live outside in this country.
