Hello

I have a west facing garden new build and the fences are very low.

Soil seems awful as new build, garden is all lawn now and a small patio.

I would like some privacy from my neighbours but cannot afford bigger fences would really appreciate some tips. Thinking if I plant something that grows to say 5ft gradually it will look less unfriendly that putting up something straight away iysim?

I'm a gardener in Aberdeen City and we have this problem ALOT! Mainly because of the amount of granite buried in the soil (I've linked more info on the background of our soil below)

You need to plant something that you can prune into any shape/ hight you need it to be, common, cheap, evergreen and unfussy. Photinia 'Red Robin' is a lovely plant that has bright red new growth when cut. Make sure you lift the turf to limit competition and even add in a few bags of extra topsoil when planting to try and give you a better loam rather than the stoney clay that I'm assuming you've been left with.

Philadelphus, weigela, forsythia Jasmine, clematis Rubens pink,,and Cornus are your friends here. All beautiful, vigour growers, easy to care for and prune, and relatively cheap

Double Flowered Philadelphus white perfumed flowers in the summer

Winter Jasmine yellow flowers, summer Jasmine white scented flowers.

Forsythia, bright yellow in spring

Weigela, my favourite, loads of different colours. You can usual buy these in the £1 shop or Wilkinsons .

Clematis Rubemns Pink, rampant spreader in late April to June pink flowers. Hack it back each year and it loves you.

Cornus dark red stems all winter.

If you don't mind a bit of work, then honeysuckle will give quick cover and provide perfume, but can get tangled if left in pruned.
